Photos of the 20th Ohio Regiment (and many officers from other states) - Folder Three

This page has the images in Folder Three of the Civil War photos primarily of the 20th Ohio Regiment - obtained from the Houghton Library at Harvard University. The companion first page is the introduction, overall index, and the first folder of photos. A companion second page contains the second folder of photos - and the index for just those photos. And this third page contains Folder Three and an index for those photos.

This folder

is unique among the three folders of images - as many of them were NOT from the 20th Ohio. General Force must have been gifted them by soldiers he met along the way.

At left is a photo of Captain Lyman N. Ayres, First Lieutenant Peter Weatherly, and Second Lieutenant William W. McCracken, all from the 20th Ohio - MS1862 Item #64 from this Folder - enhanced and colorized. The original is in order below.

This page is under construction and needs to be edited and fact checked

Folder Three - Photos of the 20th Ohio in the Civil War

This is the third of three pages of the 20th Ohio Civil War Photos, the images being obtained from the Houghton Library at Harvard University. The index for all photos in the collection is on Page One. The index for page three is below and incorporated into the overall index on page one. Each item that then follow will contain the Houghton Library item number, the original, the enhanced and colorized version, and the writing on the back that identifies the subject of the photo.

Index to Images in Folder Three

Below is the index of the photos for Folder Three. They are alphabetized by surname, and include whatever other identifying information was with the photo - rank, sometimes the company, in a few instances, the photo studio where the photo was taken.  In some cases, the subject was promoted after the photo was taken and that is noted.  The index will reflect what is written on the photo - and the description with the photo will include the promoted rank, if there was one.

The photos follow the index in item chronological order and match the index.  If I have found a corrected name or rank, I have updated the list from the names that the Houghton Library took from the photos.  This index is incorporated into the overall index on page one.

Images from Folder Three

MS am 1862 Item #1 is the folder cover for the images as held by the Houghton Library at Harvard University.

MS1862 Item #2 is G. C. Morton. His name is written on the image side of the photo.  There is no unit or rank shown.  There are civil war pension files for George C Mortons in Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York.  There is no apparent listing for anyone by this name in the 20th Ohio.  However, there is a Gilbert C. Morton of the 20th Illinois, listed below as item #6, and while the images are slightly different, they could be the same person. The colorized photo is at right, the original is below and the back of the photo (Item #3) is below the enhanced photo.  The back shows the markings of the Smith and Wybrant Studio in Louisville, Kentucky.  A three cent postage stamp is on that side, and the image has been enhanced and colorized.

MS1862 Item #4 is Lt. O. Greenough, listed also as A. D. C. (which is probably artillery). An Ogden Greenough is shown in the 30th Illinois, Company F as a Lieutenant, and was killed by a sharpshooter on June 15, 1864. The Civil War Museum has a “Tidbit Tour” of items of Ogden Greenough, and I have left a Facebook message asking if they have this image. His papers are housed at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.  There is an additional photo of him at Item #52. The colorized photo is below, the original is below right and the back of the photo (Item #5) is not shown because there was no handwriting on it.

MS1862 Item #6 is Lt. Gilbert C. Morton, shown in the 20th Illinois, as a Brigade Quartermaster.  He wrote “Yours Truly, G. C. Morton”, on the front side of the image. He is shown in other records as being from Newark, Kendall County, Illinois  He enlisted as a private in 1861, was promoted 2nd Lieutenant, and the 1st Lieutenant before he was mustered out in 1865.  It is unclear how he knew General Force. The colorized photo is at right, the original is below and the back of the photo (Item #7) is below the enhanced photo and shows it was taken at the Excelsior Gallery in Cincinnati.

MS1862 Item #10 is an unidentified man and woman.  The colorized photo is at right, the original is below and the back of the photo (Item #11) is below the enhanced photo at the right.  The back of the photo indicates that the photo was taken at the D. W. S. Rawson studio in an unidentified city.  There is a listing for a photographer of this name in the 1850’s and 1860’s in Peru, Illinois - which may be where this studio was.

MS1862 Item #14 is F. M. Rose.  It is unclear with which regiment he served. The colorized photo is below right, the original is below and the back of the photo (Item #15) is below the original photo below.   The back shows the markings of Griswold Studios in Columbus, Ohio.  It is shown with a stamp.

MS1862 Item #20 1st Lt. Colonel John H. Howe of the 124th Illinois.  He was at the Vicksburg Campaign, which is probably how he knew General Force.  He was promoted to Brigadier General before the war ended.  In 1869, President Grant appointed him Chief Justice of the Wyoming Territory.  The colorized photo is at right, the original is below and the back of the photo (Item #21) is below the enhanced photo.  In addition to the identification, the note on the back of the photo states “with kind regards and good wishes, ever your friend.”

MS1862 Item #24 is a photo of thirteen soldiers with a building in the background. The colorized photo is at right, the original is to the right and the back of the photo (Item #25) is shown below.  The studio markings Samuel A. Cooley, photographer, with the cities of Savannah, Georgia; Hilton Head and Beaufort, South Carolina referenced.  There’s a signature that appears to be L. F. Lantgen (?).

MS1862 Item #28 is Lt. Colonel Robert Newton Pearson of the 31st Illinois volunteers - which is written on the front of the image  He was at the siege of Vicksburg, and also served for a while under General Leggett. The colorized photo is below left, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #29) is not shown because there was no writing on it.

MS1862 Item #32 is Major John O. Duer of the 45th Illinois. He was later promoted to Colonel and Lt. Colonel. The 45th Illinois was in the Vicksburg Campaign.  Duer was from Galena, Illinois - as was General Grant. The colorized photo is above right, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #33) is to the right below with the writing “yours truly, J. O. Duer, Major, 4th Illinois”.

MS1862 Item #36 is M. Spaulding of the 20th Illinois. I found two Spauldings in the 20th Illinois, but not an M. Spaulding.  The 20th Illinois was at Vicksburg and other places where the 20th Ohio was. The colorized photo is below right, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #37) is below the original.

MS1862 Item #40 is of Captain William H. Carr of the 10th Illinois, Company C and later of the A. C. M. (Artillery?) of the First Division.  The 10th Illinois seemed to be with the 20th Ohio in Sherman’s March to the Sea and then the Carolinas. The colorized photo is at right, the original is just above and the back of the photo (Item #41) is just below.

MS1862 Item #44 is of C. C. William (?) or Pullan (?? - the library surmised the surname as Shillay), no rank or unit listed. The colorized photo is at right, the original is just above and the back of the photo (Item #45) is just below.  The back of the photo includes a stamp, and the studio marking shows G. S. German of Springfield, Illinois.

MS1862 Item #48 is a drawing of the 1st Division Headquarters camp of final muster out - Louisville Kentucky.  A stamp is shown on the photo and it looks like there was a post mark.  The colorized photo is above right, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #49) is to the right.  In taking the backside and playing with different levels of contrast - it appears that “KY” is at the bottom of the stamp and at least a V is in the part inside the top of the circle, which could mean the stamp was Louisville.  In the records of the 20th Ohio, it was mustered out in Louisville, Kentucky in July 1865.  In one of the books about the 20th Ohio, I noticed there were sketches - turned into engravings - in the 1885 publication of Osborn Oldroyd - but none of them match precisely this one.

MS1862 Item #52 is of Lt. Ogden Greenough of the 30th Illinois, Company F. There is a separate photo of him at Item #4. He served in various campaigns, including Vicksburg.  He was killed by a sharpshooter on June 15, 1864.  His papers, including letters during the civil war, are housed at lllinois History and Lincoln Collections at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The colorized photo is at right, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #53) is just below the colorized version at right, showing that the photo was taken at Excelsior Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio.

MS1862 Item #56 is of George L. Ball of the 20th Ohio, Company E.  The identification is written on the image side of the item.  I have not found another record for him. The colorized photo is at right, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #57) is not shown as there was no handwriting on the back.

MS1862 Item #60 is of Captain Henry L. Field of the 124th Illinois, Company C.  He served at Vicksburg. The colorized photo is at left above, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #61) is shown below right, with “With high respect, very truly yours” written on the back side along with the identification.

MS1862 Item #64 is a photo of Captain Lyman N. Ayres, First Lieutenant Peter Weatherly, and Second Lieutenant William W. McCracken, all from the 20th Ohio.   This photo is the header photo for this web page.

The colorized photo just below, the original is above right and the back of the photo (Item #65) is shown below the original photo at right.

This completes the Folder 3 page.

The page with Folder 1 photos is here.

The page with Folder 2 photos is here.

The page about the 20th Ohio is here.

The Harry and Hattie Kinney page is here.

MS1862 Item #8 is Lt. Samuel R. Adams, shown in the 68th Ohio as an Aide de Camp, and Acting Asst. Ins. Qm (?).  He was written, Yours Truly, Sam R. Adams on the image side. The 68th Ohio was right next to the 20th Ohio in the Third Division, Second Brigade at the Battle of Vicksburg. Samuel R. Adams was shown as a private, 2nd Lieutenant and then 1st Lieutenant, and then Captain in the 68th Ohio. The history shows he was promoted to the A. A. G. Volunteers from Captain - it is unclear to me what that was.  The colorized photo is at left, the original is below and the back of the photo (Item #9) is below the enhanced photo to the left below.

MS1862 Item #12 is Brigadier General John Wallace Fuller. At one point he commanded the 27th Ohio, and was also Commander of the Army of Mississippi in the western front, and was also in battles around Atlanta and the Carolinas - where the 20th Ohio also was.

This photograph is on the internet. The colorized photo is at upper left, the original is below left and the back of the photo (Item #13) is right below.  The back of the photo indicates that the photo was taken at Brady’s National Photographic and Portrait Galleries on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D. C.  (Another studio is listed in New York).  This is the studio of well-known civil war photographer Matthew Brady.

MS1862 Item #16-17 are the same as Items #18-19. The library apparently rescanned Item #18 to be able to have a better copy, so that is the copy posted below.  The message on the back is “part of headquarters Big Black Bridge”.  In an earlier image of this location, it is mentioned that there was a battle of the same name, in Mississippi. The colorized photo is below left, the original is below and the back of the photo (Item #19) is below the original photo below.

MS1862 Item #22 is Brigadier General Mortimer Dormer Leggett. He helped raised the 78th Ohio Regiment, was a friend of George McClellan, and was active in the Vicksburg campaign which is possibly where he knew General Force.  He also was involved in Sherman’s March to the Sea. He is mentioned in General Force’s comments to the 1876 20th Ohio reunion - which General Leggett attended - as “Colonel Leggett”, during the advance on Corinth and in Bolivar. In those comments General Force later mentioned that “General Leggett” took command of the 2nd Brigade in General Logan’s division, which included the 20th Ohio - as well as the 68th and 78th Ohio and the 30th Illinois - from whom there are photos in this collection. President Grant appointed him U. S. Commissioner of Patents in 1871.  The colorized photo is at left, the original is below and the back of the photo (Item #23) is not shown as nothing was written on the back.

MS1862 Item #26 is Lt. Colonel Dan Bradley of the 20th Illinois volunteers - which is written on the front of the image  He was from Champaign, Illinois and for awhile served on General Leggett’s staff - the photo of General Leggett above (Item #22).  He was at Vicksburg, which could explain why he knew General Force. The colorized photo is below left, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #27) is not shown because there was no writing on it.

MS1862 Item #30 is William T. Mitchell, drummer for the 12th Wisconsin.  The writing on the back also states that “he helped take me off the field on July 22”. The 12th Wisconsin was at the Vicksburg Campaign.  However, General Force won the Medal of Honor for actions on July 22, 1864 in the Battle of Atlanta.  The 12th Wisconsin was there for that battle - this must be what General Force was referring to in the note.

The colorized photo is at left, the original is just above and the back of the photo (Item #31) is below and is shown to have been taken at the H. S. Clark photography studio in Green Bay Wisconsin.  The back is shown with a stamp.

MS1862 Item #34 is Captain John B. Raymond of the 31th Illinois. He was promoted to Captain for actions in the Vicksburg Campaign, and later served a term in the House of Representatives from Dakota Territory. The colorized photo is below left, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #35) is to below the original with the writing “Capt. John B. Raymond, 31st Ill”.  The further note appears not to be legible, something like: “Pennl March Il”.  This is the second photo taken at the Bowman and Hawson Studio, believed to be in Peru, Illinois.

MS1862 Item #38 is of two soldiers - Lt. Edwin Stanton McCook of the 31st Illinois and Major John C. Fry of the 20th Ohio.  Major Fry has been in a number of photos in Folders One and Two.  Lt. Stanton was at Vicksburg and Atlanta - obviously connecting with members of the 20th Ohio.  He was appointed acting Governor of Dakota Territory and was killed there in 1873. The colorized photo is at left, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #39) is below the colorized photo.

MS1862 Item #42 is of Lt. Henry O. Dwight of the 20th Ohio. He refused a promotion to Captain near the end of the war. He was later a missionary. An 1886 account of his war experience is here. The colorized photo is below left, the original is just above and the back of the photo (Item #43) with stamp is just below.

MS1862 Item #46 is of Captain B. F. Holcomb of General Logan’s staff.  General Logan was at Vicksburg.  I have not found other references to Captain Holcomb yet.  The colorized photo is at left, the original is just above and the back of the photo (Item #47) is just below.

MS1862 Item #50 is of Lt. Henry C. Foster of the 23rd Indiana (the handwriting looked like the 25th Indiana - but I found records of the Lt in the 23rd).  Lt. Foster was known as “coonskin” by the hat he wore.  The 23rd Indiana was at many of the same battles as the 20th Ohio, including Vicksburg.  The colorized photo is at left, the original is just above and the back of the photo (Item #51) is just below, reading: “Lt. H. C. Foster, 25th Indiana, portrait of officer of brigade”.

MS1862 Item #54 is of Sergeant Christopher W. McCracken of the 20th Ohio, Company A.  He was promoted to Lieutenant and mustered out with the regiment.  There was at least one other McCracken in the 20th Ohio. This McCracken was from Morrow County. The colorized photo is at left, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #55) is just below the colorized version.

MS1862 Item #58 is of Captain William Hemstreet shown as Provost Marshal and Judge Advocate of the First Division A. C.  He is shown in the biography linked just below as having served in the 18th Missouri and 57th Illinois - which might match the handwriting reference on the back of the image, but is not clear. There is a biography of him alphabetically listed here, showing he was in areas near the 20th Ohio during the war. The photo is of a woman and woman, likely the subject and his wife. The colorized photo is at left below, the original is just below and the back of the photo (Item #59) is shown with a stamp and the handwriting just below the original photo.

MS1862 Item #62 is of Lt. William L. Waddell of the 20th Ohio, Company I.  He served as 2nd and 1st Lieutenant and later as Captain. There was a second Waddell in Company I. I have listed this as William. The colorized photo just below, the original is below left and the back of the photo (Item #63) is shown below left.

MS1862 Item #66 is of John Foy, printer to Company G 20th Ohio and on duty to headquarters.  The colorized photo is below, the original is below left and the back of the photo (Item #67) is just below the colorized photo.
