Fred Christensen, Ella Nash, Sophia Hagedorn and Families - of Denmark, Illinois, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, and California
This page is under construction - it still needs to be edited and fact checked
The Third Known Child of Hans and Christiane. Fred Christensen – born March 17, 1860 in Denmark, the son of Hans Christensen and Christiane Rasmusdatter. The basic facts on his life were provided in the Charles Nash genealogy. He married Ella J. Nash about 1890. Their only child, a son, Lynn, was born in December, 1902. Ella died in 1908, and Fred remarried Sophia Hagedorn about 1911 and had two additional children – Neoma and Eugene. It appears that this marriage ended before the 1920 census was taken. Fred married a third time in California to Lizzie Christensen, the widow of Fred’s brother John, in 1922. He appears to have divorced her at some point not all that long after. Fred was in California with Lynn in 1936. He died in 1951 in California, and was returned to South Dakota for burial.
Fred born March 17, 1860 in Denmark, the son of Hans Christensen and Christiane Rasmusdatter. He is shown in Torslunde church records to have been born on March 17, and to have been christened in the Torslunde church on May 28, with Hans and Christiane listed as his parents.
Frederick Carl was shown with his parents and siblings in the 1870 Danish census in Torslunde, age 9. Fred arrived with his family in Quebec in the summer of 1872 on the S. S. Prussian of the Allen Line, where is shown in the passenger record as Fred, age 9 (the writing is unclear, it could also read 11).
Frederick C. Christensen, born in 1860, and emigrating from Denmark in 1872, is shown in Naturalization Records for Yankton County, South Dakota – v. 340, p. 1. The significant fact in the record is that the Port of Entry to North America was Quebec. This led to me finding the passenger record shown elsewhere in this information – of the Christensen family arriving on a ship of the Allen Line in Quebec in July, 1872.
Fred is shown with his family in the 1875 Kansas State Census in Shannon Township, Pottawatomie County, Kansas in an entry taken on March 1, 1875 – with Chris shown as F., 15. In the 1880 census, Fred is shown with his family in Waupaca County, Wisconsin as Fred, 19.
There’s an article in the Leonardville Monitor of Thursday, March 12, 1885: “Fred Christensen of Darlington Dako. Is visiting with his parents here.” This is significant because it states “parents”. Darlington is a township in Charles Mix County, South Dakota.
Fred Christensen is shown in the index of homestead records for Charles Mix County as Frederich Christensen, Section 35 in Carroll Township.
Charles Mix County marriage records show a marriage between Frederick C. Christensen, a resident of Carroll Township, age 24, a farmer, and Ella J. Nash, a resident of Carroll Township, 25. They were married by pastor H. H. Cotton, M.E. [Methodist Episcopal] Minister of Rhoda Township on July 10, 1889 in the presence of Wesley and Ida Hickok of Carroll Township. It was also shown that Wesley, Ella, and Frederick were of the Flora Post Office address. The heading of the certificate led with "Territory of Dakota".
Fred and Ella Christensen were shown in the 1895 South Dakota State census in Carroll Township in Charles Mix County. Two people were shown in their entry, Fred and Ella, with Fred, 34, and Scandinavian, and Ella Christenson, 30, and "native".
An 1898 letter to Ida Nash from Ella Christensen was saved and passed down:
“Letterhead: Office of Ella Christensen, Clerk, Carroll School District Chas. Mix County (also says smaller, upper right corner, Educator School Supply Co., Mitchell, S. D.)
Flora, S. D. Feb. 28, 1898
Dear Ida: This evening I will answer your letter which I rec'd yesterday, as I intend to go up and stay with pa tomorrow.
I suppose Jim will be up to vote, for I think there will be some excitement again.
Pa is getting along very nicely only he is so lonesome sometimes. He expects Mate now every time the stage comes down. Tomorrow is almost too early in the week, quite likely she will come Thursday or Saturday.
We have had the carpenter working on our house one week nearly, and the frame is up and sheeting on ready to put on the cornice and shingle. We do not expect him back till Wednesday.
I am not sure that I will have 10 lbs. of butter to spare by the 16th as I just sent it off last week, since your letter was written, but of course I had not received it. However I will send what I have whether it is 5 lbs or 10. I presume I could send some eggs if you want any.
You are early with your housecleaning, one good point about plastering. How do you like the walls.
Fred went to a sale to-day over to W. B. Woods, didn't want to buy any thing just wanted to see if he could hire a man, hasn't hired any one yet.
Good night.
Ella Christensen”

It was signed by S. R. Hussey, Assessor, He is also shown as male, white, married, could read and write, with 45 years in the United States and 32 years in South Dakota.
[The Hagedorn Connection. In the 1900 South Dakota census in Signal Township (school), Charles Mix County, South Dakota, taken June 8, 1900, there is an Anton (the last three letters are covered), 59, a farmer, immigrated in 1880, widower, born in Germany with both his parents born in Germany. There is a Sophia Hagedorn shown in Charles Mix County marriage records having married a Harry Wood on July 5, 1909, both of Geddes. He was 32, she was age 29. The marriage happened in Wheeler. There is no Harry Wood or Sophia Wood listed in the 1910 census that appears to match this. In the 1910 census, there is a Sophia U. Hagedorn in Jackson Township of Charles Mix County, age 30. She is shown with her father, A. Hagedorn, who is a gardener raising vegetables, 68 – both born in Germany with both their parents born in Germany.

Also shown was Eugene Christiansen (sic), nine months old (there is no date of the census in the record), born in South Dakota, ancestry Dane and German, with his father born in Denmark and his mother in Germany. Both children were also shown in Ward Two of Platte.
The 1920 census shows Fred Christensen, 59, in the City of Platte, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, in an entry taken on January 15, 1920. Fred Christiansen (sic), 59, divorced, a general farm manager born in Denmark with both his parents born in Denmark. He is shown as having immigrated in 1892 (sic), naturalized in 1898. With him is Lynn, 17, son, single, born in South Dakota with his father born in Denmark and his mother in Illinois.
The 1930 census shows Fred and Lynn in Carroll Township, Charles Mix Township, South Dakota. The date the census was taken was not listed. Fred is shown as 67, divorced, owner of his property with the value unclear, born in Denmark, with both his parents born in Denmark. He is shown as immigrated in 1872 and naturalized. Lynn is 27, single, born in South Dakota with his father born in Denmark and his mother in Illinois. Fred is shown to have originally spoken Danish, and as a farmer in general farming. Lynn has no occupation listed.
Frederick C. Christensen is listed in the 1925 Long Beach City Directory, residing at 711 E. 5th with Lizzie E. [California marriage records show that Fred Christensen married Lizzie Christensen in 1922 in Los Angeles County. Lizzie was the widow of Fred’s brother, John.] She is shown living at 1908 Junipero Ave through the 1945 directories, alone. Fred C. Christensen is shown at 1623 Sherman Place in the 1938 Long Beach directory. [It is now clear that Lizzie is not a third wife – but the widow of Fred’s brother John. She is shown below in the section on John, and is shown as the Junipero address in the 1940 census.]
There was no Fred or Lynn Christensen apparent in the 1925 South Dakota state census, explained by the fact that they were in California.
Fred and Lynn are shown in the 1930 census in Carroll Township, Charles Mix County, South Dakota in a census entry that is undated. Fred Christensen is shown as 67, a farmer on a general farm, divorced, born in Denmark with both is parents born in Denmark, spoke Danish before coming to the country; with Lynn, son, 27, single, none as is occupation, born in South Dakota with his father born in Denmark and his mother in Illinois.

He was shown as white, male, single, and could read and write. He had been 32 years in the U.S. and the same number of years in South Dakota.
Fred is shown in the 1940 census at 2316 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California in an entry taken on April 2, 1940. Shown is Fred Christensen, head, 80, widowed, living in 1935 in Platte, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, no occupation listed, born in Denmark. With him is Lynn F. Christensen, 37, born in South Dakota, also living in Platte, Charles Mix County, South Dakota, in 1935, a file clerk for an aircraft manufacturing company.
A death certificate obtained from the State of California shows Fred died on June 8, 1951 in Los Angeles County. He is shown as Frederick Carl Christensen, born March 17, 1860 in Lealand [sic], Denmark. His usual occupation was listed as farmer, and his age was listed as 91. He was also listed as divorced. He was a United States citizen. His father was listed as Hans Christensen, born in Denmark, and his mother was simply listed as "Olsen", born in Denmark. He is shown not to have a social security number and died at the Los Angeles County General Hospital on 1200 N. State St. His usual residence was written in unclear handwriting, but seems to be 4806 Sautell Blvd in Los Angeles. It was stated that he would be buried in Carroll Township Cemetery in Platt [sic], South Dakota. The funeral director was Armstrong Family. The informant for the death certificate was L. F. Christensen. The entry in the California database for death records shows the same information.
In the June 14, 1951 Platte Enterprise ran an obituary for Fred Christensen, which follows in its entirety: "Former Resident is Buried Here Tuesday. Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Sev Gjerde officiating, for Frederick Carl Christensen, former Platte resident, who passed away in Los Angeles Friday, June 8.
Mr. Christensen was born in Laaland (sic), Denmark, March 17, 1860. In 1888 he was married to Ella Nash, who died in 1908. To this union was born a son, Lynn, of Culver City, Cal. In 1910 he married Sophia Hagedorn. To this union were born two children, Mrs. Neoma Kruger of George, Iowa, and Eugene of Los Angeles. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Ida Nash of Platte, a brother, Henry, of Eau Claire, Wis., five grandchildren, and his three children.
Relatives from out of town who attended the funeral services included Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Christensen and daughter, Carol, of Culver City, Cal., Mr. and Mrs. John Kruger and daughter Irene, of George, Iowa, and Mrs. Jay Seeley and daughter, Mary Jane, of Gregory."
Below the obituary ran a "card of thanks", which read: "We wish to acknowledge our sincere appreciation of the many kindnesses extended to us by the brethren of Doric Lodge, A. F. & A. M., and numerous other friends at the time of the loss of our father. Mr. and Mrs. Lynn F. Christensen. Mr. and Mrs. John Kruger."
Lynn Christensen – born on Dec 24, 1902, (sources list December 23, 24, and 27) the son of Fred and Ella. According to Charles Nash' genealogy, Lynn moved to California in 1936. He married Jewell Jacobs, and they had three children: Carol (1947), Frederick (1952), and Julianna (birthdate not listed). There is a delayed birth certificate record shown for Lynn Frederick Christensen, born December 24, 1902 in Charles Mix County, the son of Frederick Carl Christensen and Ella Joanna Nash. It was dated August 5, 1940.
There is a Lynn Christensen shown as a clerk with W.P. Fuller & Co., residing at 28 San Diego in Long Beach in the 1922 city directory. He is shown as a sheetmetal worker residing at 40 Ontario in the 1923 directory. He is listed as a student residing at 1423 E. Broadway in the 1925 directory. This is why I could not find Lynn or Fred in the 1925 South Dakota state census.
Lynn is shown with his father Fred in the 1930 census in Carroll Township, Charles Mix County, South Dakota in a census entry that is undated.
In the 1935 South Dakota state census, Lynn Christensen was shown with his father in Platte Post Office, Ward 1, 32, a farmer with a Platte High School education, born in South Dakota with his father born in Denmark and his mother in Illinois. He was shown as white, male, single, and could read and write. He had been 32 years in the U.S. and the same number of years in South Dakota.
Lynn is shown with his father in the 1940 census at 2316 Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, California in an entry taken on April 2, 1940.
Lynn Frederick Christensen is shown as registering for the World War II draft in Los Angeles County on February 14, 1942. His physical and mailing address is shown as 4806 S. Sawtelle Blvd. in Culver City, Los Angeles County, California. He was 39 years old, born in Platte, South Dakota on December 24, 1902. The name of the person who will always know his address was listed as F. C. Christensen at the same address. He is shown as working for Douglas Aircraft at 3000 Ocean Park Blvd. in Santa Monica. He signed it as Lynn F. Christensen. He was also shown as white, blue eyes, brown hair, light brown complexion, 5’ 11” tall, 165 pounds weight.
Lynn is shown in California marriage records as having married Jewell J. Sager on December 7, 1944 (which explains why she was born Jacobs, and had a son named Sager listed in her obituary), in Los Angeles. Lynn was shown as 41, and Jewell was shown as 28. She was divorced, this being her second marriage, born in Michigan, doing clerical for an aircraft company. Her father was listed as Alfred S. Jacobs, born in Indiana. Lynn was single, born in South Dakota, doing clerical for an aircraft company, his father was Frederick C. Christensen, born in Denmark and his mother was Ella J. Nash, born in Illinois. The Nash Genealogy refers to Lynn marrying Jewell Jacobs, which was her maiden name.
Lynn is shown in the California death record database as having been born December 24, 1902 in South Dakota, and died on May 14, 1971 in Los Angeles at age 68 years.
From the Mitchell (South Dakota) Daily Republic of May 29, 1971: “Former Platte Resident Dies. By Republic News Service. PLATTE – Funeral services and burial were held in Los Angeles, Calif., for Lynn Frederick Christensen, a former resident of this area.
Mr. Christensen was born to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Christensen, Platte, on Dec. 27, 1902 and died May 14 in California.
He lived with his father in Carroll Township after his mother’s death until his married to Jewell Jacobs in 1946. He was a member of the Acacia Chapter, Order of the Easter Star, of which he was past Worthy Patron.
Survivors include his widow, a son, Frederick, Los Angeles; two daughters, Mrs. Edward (Carol) Martinez, and Juliana, Oakland, Calif.”
From the Eugene Register-Guard (Lane County, Oregon) of Monday, December 12, 2011 is the following obituary: “Jewell Christensen. Jewell Marion Christensen of Eugene died Dec. 4 of age-related causes. She was 95. A private family memorial service was held.
She was born Aug. 19, 1916, in Detroit, Mich. Her parents were Alfred Sanders and Ella Wishmire Jacobs.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Christensen of Eugene; a son, Chris of Guerneville, Calif.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Her husband of 27 years, L.F. "Chris" Christensen, died in 1971. A son, Jack Sager, died in 1993.
Arrangements by Sunset Hills Cemetery, Funeral Home & Crematorium in Eugene. Remembrances to Sacred Heart Hospice.” The Find-A-Grave listing contained this obituary and listed her burial location as “unknown”.
The Children of Lynn “Chris” and Jewell Christensen. Carol Ann Christensen – listed in the Charles Nash genealogy as being a daughter of Lynn Christensen, born in 1947. She is the one of Lynn’s three children that is obviously listed in California birth records. She is shown as having a mother with the maiden name Jacobs, born in Los Angeles on March 4, 1947. Carol is shown in the 1971 obituary of her father was Mrs. Edward (Carol) Martinez, apparently of Oakland, California. There is a divorce listed in the California divorce index for Carol A. Christensen and Eduardo M. Martinez in December 1976 in Alameda County.
She is shown in the 2011 obituary of her mother as Carol Christensen of Eugene, Oregon – which is where Jewell was living at the time of her death.
Frederick/“Chris”/Christian Michael Christensen – listed in the Charles Nash genealogy as Frederick, a son of Lynn Christensen, born in 1952. He was shown in the 1971 obituary of his father as Frederick, living in Los Angeles. He was shown in the 2011 obituary of his mother as “Chris” of Guerneville, California.
In the white pages in 2020, there is a listing for Christian Michael Christensen, age 68, in Guerneville. The only Christensen in California birth records that fits the birth year listed in the Charles Nash genealogy is a Christian Michael Christensen, born in Los Angeles County on January 12, 1952, listed with a mother with the surname Jacobs. The son listed in that genealogy for Lynn and Jewell was born in that year, but was listed as being named Frederick, but the Chris in the 2020 record matches the birth record, that matches the son of Lynn and Jewell. The 2020 record indicates that he had also lived in Oakland and Santa Monica, and is related to Marybeth Eth Lockhart.
Juliana Christensen – not listed in the Charles Nash genealogy, but listed in another record, no birth year listed. Juliana was listed in her father’s 1971 obituary as living in Oakland, California. She was not mentioned in the obituary of her mother in 2005. I can find no other record for her.
Children of Fred Christensen and his second wife Sophia Hagedorn. Fred had two children with Sophia Hagedorn during their marriage – Neoma, born in 1912, and Eugene, born ca 1914 – both born in Charles Mix County. They appear in the 1915 South Dakota census with their parents in Charles Mix County. And both children show up in his 1951 obituary – Eugene as being of Los Angeles and Neoma having married and living in Lyon County, Iowa. I had been stumped on finding them in records between Fred and Sophia’s divorce and the obituary – the marriage is broken up by the 1920 census. Eventually, I figured out that Sophia had remarried, moved to California and in at least one record the two children are listed with the surname of her husband, George White.
Shown on 2841 Chestnut Street in Lomita Township, Precinct #2 of Los Angeles County in an entry taken on April 14 and 15, 1930, is George L. White, head, 47, a rancher in garden projects, born in Kansas with both his parents born in Kansas. He was shown as married the first time at age 27; with Sophie, wife, 50, age 30 at her first marriage, none as her occupation, born in Germany with both her parents born in Germany; and two children, both shown as born in South Dakota with their father born in Kansas and their mother in Germany – Neoma, daughter, 17; and Eugene, son, 15, both with “none” as their occupation.
George and Sophie are shown in the 1940 census at 1607 W. 84th Place in Assembly District 66 in Los Angeles County, in an entry taken on April 18, 1940. George White, 57, born in Kansas, a painter in building construction is shown with Sophie, 60, no occupation, born in Germany.
Neoma Christensen (Kruger) – listed in the Platte obituary of Fred Christensen, and shown with Fred and Sophia in the 1915 South Dakota state census at age three. In the online database of South Dakota birth record, there is a record for Neoma Christensen, showing she was born on May 6, 1912 in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, with her father listed as Frederick Christensen and her mother as Sophia Hagedorn.
In the obituary she is shown with her husband and child as “Mr. and Mrs. John Kruger and daughter Irene, of George, Iowa”. In Minnesota birth records, there is a birth on October 29, 1942 in Noble County, Minnesota of Ione Ekeline Kruger, daughter of John Kruger and Neoma Christensen. That means that the Irene referred to in the obituary was listed as Ione on her birth record.
[Until I found the 1930 listing in Los Angeles that included Neoma and her mother and brother, I had found only one other possible match: In the 1930 census, there is a listing for a Naomi Christison in Beresford, Union County, South Dakota in an entry taken on May 3, 1930. The age of the person in this listing is a bit off, as her record shows she was 25, a servant, born in South Dakota with both her parents born in Denmark.]
There is a 1957 California marriage record between Berl G. Johnston and Neoma Kruger – whose name is also shown as Christensen. Burl G. Johnston is shown in social security records as having died on July 21, 1973 in Los Angeles County, California. He was shown as born on January 23, 1906 in North Carolina.
Burl Gentry Johnston is shown in the Find-A-Grave listing buried Melrose Abbey Memorial Park in Anaheim, Orange County. He was shown as born on January 23, 1906 in Ashe County, North Carolina and died on July 21, 1973 in Los Angeles. Shown with him is Neoma S. Johnston, buried in the same cemetery, born in 1912 and died in 2009.
Eugene Christensen – shown in the 1915 South Dakota census as the nine month old son of Fred Christensen and Sophia Hagedorn. He is shown in the 1951 obituary of Fred as living in Los Angeles.
Eugene Christensen – In the online database of South Dakota birth record, there is a record for Eugene Christensen, showing she was born on September 13, 1914 in Charles Mix County, South Dakota, with his father listed as Frederick Christensen and her mother as Sophia Hagedorn. He is shown above in the 1930 census.
In the 1940 census, Eugene White is shown at 1424 W. 94rd St., in Los Angeles City, in the 15th Councilmanic district in an entry taken on April 8 and 9, 1940. Eugene is shown as 25, single, born in South Dakota, a building painter.
Eugene Christensen White is shown as marrying Leona Frances Schwartz in Los Angeles on July 20, 1940 – three months after the census entry above. Eugene is shown as born in South Dakota, a painter, single, with his parents listed as George White and Sophia Hagedorn.
There is a social security death record for Eugene Carl Christensen, showing he was born September 13, 1914 in Platte, South Dakota the son of Frederick C. Christensen and Sophia Hagedorn. This record shows that he died on January 4, 2005. It appears in this record he applied for social security in September 1976.
There is a Find-A-Grave listing that matches the birth and death dates in the social security record, showing that Eugene C. Christensen was buried in Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, San Mateo County, California, born on September 13, 1914 and died on January 4, 2005. He is shown as having served in the U. S. Navy in World War II.
There does not appear to be a Leona or a Frances in this cemetery. Leona Frances Drennon – who is also listed as Leona Christensen and Leona White – is shown in the social security death index as born on May 29, 1918 in Rock Rapids, Iowa and died on December 26, 2001 – and she is buried in Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verde, Los Angeles County, California. This all indicates that she and Eugene divorced at some point, and she remarried.
